To begin...I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination and I don't claim to be...but here is how I do it... First I remove the reel from the rod, then I thread the line thru the eye on the baitcaster, and thru the cover on the spincaster, then tie it to my spool............ Then I lay the spool of line directly under me, and holding a bit of tension on the line by letting the line run between my thumb and fore finger with my off hand (reel holding hand) as it is spooled up, and I start reeling it on. After a few turns I stop and see if the line is coming off the spool smoothly, or if it is "twisting up"... If it is spooling on smoothly I go ahead and reel it on... If it is twisting up I simply turn the spool of line until the twists are out, then lay it back down under me, but on the other side than it was laying on to begin with, and then reel it on........... Laying on one side of the spool the line will come off smoothly...while laying on the other side of the spool it twists up.......and I have no idea why this is........ Spinning reels I usually leave on the rod. It is just easier for me to hold tension on the line with my thumb and fore finger as it is spooled on this way because I can hold the rod by planting the rod butt in my belly as I reel it up.
Like I said, I am no expert...but this has always worked for me...and my wife and I change out alot of line, maybe more than that... In fact, my wife and I changed out line on probably about 30 reels, baitcasters, spincasters, and spinning reels, at the beginning of spring, and we just placed an order with Bass Pro last week, in which we ordered enough line, in various tests, to change a dozen or so reels a couple more times each....but, being retired, and having a wife who is a confirmed fishaholic, when the weather is decent we do ALOT of fishing... In fact, we went 4 days last week.

Actually we've been catching quite a few, and have a goodly part of the freezer filled... The wife plans on having the kids and their spouses, and her brother and his son, over this evening for a big fish fry... She said we need to "make some room in the freezer". .................... Look under "Been Doing Any Fishing" for a picture I just posted of my nephew holding some of the catfish we caught the other day... We caught a few others, but those 3 were the largest.
