I recently found a source of old growth Montana Juniper wood fence posts. A nearby rancher just pulled them to be replaced with new posts. His Great Grandfather put them in the ground back in 1906 when he first started homesteading their land. This wood is getting to be very hard to find and I was extremely lucky to get some and will be getting more. There is a lot of beautiful wood hidden under all that knarley and weathered wood... most of it is very solid in the center sections. Here is what it looks like ... And here is the slate call that I made out of some of it. This little baby has a lot of turkey in it too ! This is my first attempt at making a call out of wood. The body is hollowed out of one piece of Juniper. The striker is laminated with some more of the same Juniper and some Big Leaf Maple that came out of my yard with a Poplar peg. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out. I still want to put a couple more coats of hand rubbed oil finish on it and add an adbraisive pad to it . Then it will be finished. Scott

I gotta say, that is a beautiful call to come from an old, weathered piece of wood like that.

hundred year old fence posts, thats some old wood Great looking call also Yep, ... Juniper grows very slowly like most Cedars do. Tonight I started cutting some posts up into sections and some of the larger 5-6" round posts have so many small , tight growth rings in them , you can't count em without magnification ! Very tightly grained. I would esimate the bigger trees were already 200 plus years old when they were cut down in the early 1900's. Scott

thats a fine lookin call.. its amazin what you can do with some of that old wood... ive made some pistol grips and knife handles out of some bodoc that came from some fence post that my grandaddy cut in 1945..that old bodoc will eat up a saw blade...it will throw sparks like you cuttin a piece of metal..sure makes some pretty handles

I am going in for a colonoscopy the first of September, and I'll ask the doctor about that when he gets done.
